In this edition of Orioles101's Baltimore Orioles player profile series, we take a look at the man who made his MLB debut this September for the Orioles and is our number eight ranked Orioles prospect: L.J. Hoes.
Hoes was drafted by Baltimore in the third round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of St. Johns High School. He has a nice outfield frame (6'1'' 181 lbs) and has very nice athleticism. Hoes has very nice bat speed with a mechanical swing to go along with it. He is very raw defensively and his speed allows him to make up for some misreads, but is improving greatly defensively. He has a rifle for an arm and has superb range in the outfield. This year, Hoes received the Brooks Robinson Award for Orioles Minor League Player of the year! His quickness, great poise at the plate, and raw ability have allowed him to be promoted every season and this year, late in September, he finally got the call every kid dreams of as the Orioles promoted him to Baltimore. Although he only got one at-bat, a ground out to short stop, he has now gotten a taste of the show and is more motivated then ever.
L.J. was kind enough to sit down with Orioles101 for an interview and respond to a few questions for our readers.
Orioles101: First let me just thank you for taking the time to do this for us and I know our readers are going to enjoy this. So I got to ask, what was your reaction back in September when you got told you were being called up to the big leagues?
No Problem. I was very excited, it was a dream come true. It's a memory I will never forget.
Orioles101: What are you working on/focusing on this offseason?
Just trying to make myself bigger, stronger, faster, and a smarter baseball player.
Orioles101: With so many questions in left field for the Orioles, is that your goal heading into Spring Training?
No, not really, I just want to go to camp and make myself better and get ready for the season.
Orioles101: I understand that. You were awarded the Brooks Robinson Award for Orioles Minor League Player of the Year this season, how did that feel?
It was wonderful, I played this season for my grandfather who just passed, so it was great to dedicate the award to him.
Orioles101: I remember reading that and I am sure being able to dedicate the award to him was great for you. What have you learned from your time in pro ball?
Just that it's a grind, you have to be ready to play everyday.
Orioles101: What are you looking forward to most in 2013?
Playing baseball and hopefully helping the Orioles win.
Orioles101: Last one for you, who win's this year's Super Bowl?
I don't know, I like the Patriots or 49'ers, but I have to go with the hometown Baltimore Ravens.
Orioles101: Haha, good man! I just want to thank you you again L.J. for taking the time to do this, I greatly appreciate it. Good luck this season, and look forward to seeing you at the Yard!
Orioles101 really appreciates L.J. Hoes for taking the time for us, and odds are Orioles fans will see him at the Yard this season, if not Opening Day, not long after.
