The Baltimore Orioles made another offseason move yesterday, but not the caliber of move that Orioles fans were hoping for as Baltimore claimed C Luis Martinez off of waivers from the Texas Rangers.
Baltimore had an open spot on their 40-man roster, which many anticipated that it remained open for a possible trade or free agent signing, but claiming Martinez now leaves the 40-man roster full. Martinez was originally drafted in the twelfth round of the 2007 MLB Draft by the San Diego Padres, and remained in the Padres organization before heading to Texas last year.
He is now 27 years old, and has a career line of .272/.362/.364 in six minor league seasons. He did make brief appearances in the big leagues with both the Padres and Rangers, and is a combined 14-77 at the plate in the Majors. His best quality is his defense, as he is a very good defensive catcher with a great arm.
Sorry Orioles fans, I know this wasn't the type of move you were waiting for, but at least there will be a competition for backup catcher, and competition fuels intensity.
