As if the words "pitchers and catchers" report are not exciting enough for Baltimore Orioles fans and baseball fans in general, perhaps the words "first full squad workout" are even more exciting as that means, at least for Baltimore, their first exhibition game is just a week away.
Baltimore will have its first full squad workout today, and will see their final two players report to camp today as well. Yamaico Navarro, although the reason has not been released, did not report to camp yesterday before the 6 pm deadline, but is expected to be there today. If not for a legitimate reason, Navarro did not make a good first impression with the team that was going to allow him to compete for the utility infielder position.
Also, the Jair Jurrjens deal was at last finalized yesterday, but the deal was re-negotiated from a Major League contract to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring Training. This comes after almost three weeks since it was announced the Orioles had come to terms with Jurrjens. It is now obvious that Baltimore was not happy with the results of his physical and used those results as leverage to change the deal to a minor league contract. I have been told by sources that it was Jurrjens' knee that was the concern, and although the Orioles have not "officially" stated the reason, his knee is what I have been told. It will be interesting to watch Jurrjens during Spring Training now to see if he has enough health to even pitch enough innings to prove he can contribute to the big league squad.
The first full squad workout is more exciting to me than just simply pitchers and catchers reporting because you finally get to see the entire team on an official basis. Do not get me wrong, when pitchers and catchers report, I am extremely excited because that is the official start to baseball season, but when the entire team is there, I get a little more amped up for the season.
