The Baltimore Orioles announced via press release earlier this week their plans for Military Appreciation Day and Memorial Day. There are a ton of activities planned to help honor the military and armed forces.
Today, May 25, the Orioles will hold a Military Appreciation Day as part of the team's ongoing military appreciation efforts. Pre-game ceremonies include a performance by the US Air Force Drill team, and Col. Brian Foley, Garrison Commander of US Army Fort Meade, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. In addition the U.S. Army Color Guard from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, The Old Guard will present the colors, the US Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team will perform, and vocalist SFC April Boucher from the U.S. Army Field Band will perform the National Anthem as nine active duty soldiers from Fort Meade take the field with Orioles players. There is something for the fans as well as the first 20,000 fans 15 and over will receive an Orioles Military Appreciation ripcord bracelet, proudly made in the USA.
Every Sunday home game this season, the O's will donate 500 tickets (6,500 over the course of the season) to military members in conjunction with Fort Meade, as part of the Players Give Back program. In addition, hundreds of tickets have been donated to the following military groups so far in 2014: The Air Force, The American Flag Foundation, The US Army Reserve, MCVETS, Operation Homefront, and numerous military families. The United Service Organization, Darren and Elizabeth O'Day, and OriolesREACH will host a pre-game barbecue picnic, "Barbecue for the Troops" today from noon-1:30 p.m. to support the troops in the bullpen picnic area. Several current Orioles are expected to attend, and the event will include a silent auction located by Gate E from Noon- 3:00 p.m. featuring many one-of-a-kind items provided by and autographed by Orioles players. Net proceeds raised through this event will go directly to USO programs that support deployed troops, military families, wounded, ill and injured troops and their caregivers and families of the fallen. In 2013 this event raised $23,463 to benefit the United Service Organization.
In continuation, as part of the Orioles' Military Appreciation Program, presented by GEICO, the Orioles and OriolesREACH donate a catered private suite at each Sunday home game at Oriole Park to servicemen and women. This Sunday, May 25, military members from Fort Meade and the USO will enjoy the game vs. the Cleveland Indians from a catered suite, have a meet-and-greet with Nick Markakis and Zach Britton, and receive a player T-shirt.
Tomorrow on Memorial Day, May 26, all Orioles uniformed personnel will wear a special road jersey that features a digicamo pattern designed into the twill (Baltimore script, name, number) as well as a digicamo patterned cap featuring the cartoon bird. These jerseys and caps, which will be autographed and authenticated, will be auctioned on www.orioles.com/camojerseys beginning May 26 at 12:00 p.m. through June 2 at 11:59 p.m. with proceeds going to the Fort Meade Alliance. The Fort Meade Alliance Foundation will use the donation to help with an anticipated $2 million in renovations to a facility on Fort Meade, establishing a Resiliency Center for the entire military community, including Department of Defense employees and contractors.
It is always nice to see our Orioles hosting events and auctions to help support any cause, especially when it comes to our troops who help protect this country and preserve out freedom. From everyone here at Orioles101, we just want to say thank you to all those who have and continue to serve our country.
